I started this project by spending about a
week studying and making sketches from photographs of tropical
fish and other creatures. I then made a loose sketch of
the overall design. I started with a piece of royal blue
medium weight canvas fabric (not embroidery canvas) and
spent about 4 hours bleaching and overdyeing it for the background shading.
Following the sketch I worked the two largest fish, the scallop, and
the boat. From there on I completely freestyled. Easily a quarter
of my time "working" on this project was spent gazing at
it as I waited for inspiration to hit. Luckily, inspiration kept hitting.
When it was "done" I had to hide it in the attic for 3 months
because every time I looked at it I would feel an obsessive urge to
do "that one last thing" that would make it perfect.
Unfortunately this is a really bad scan. I'll
try to get a better one the next time I have access to a scanner.
